DEFENSE: NC State dominates Boston College 24-8

Defense was the name of the game Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts as NC State defeated Boston College 24-8 handing the Eagles their sixth consecutive loss. Both Boston College and NC State brought their A-game defensively. The difference between the two teams was NC State simply had superior offense talent. BC entered the game with the #1 ranked defense nationally and the Wolfpack was ranked #10 respectively on defense.

NC State (6-3, 2-3), who desperately needed a win after losing 3 of its last 4 games, is now bowl eligible with the decisive victory. Boston College (3-7, 0-7) remains winless in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
With the road victory, the Wolfpack was able to avenge last season’s loss when the Eagles rolled into Carter-Finley Stadium and upset the Pack 30-14.

The Wolfpack started the week with adversity when they learned their star running back and ACC rushing leader, junior Matt Dayes, would miss the game and the remainder of the season with a foot injury. Dayes injured the foot during last weekend’s loss to Clemson.

The game was a defensive slugfest until early in the 2nd quarter when Jacoby Brissett hit Maurice Trowell on a deep bomb for an 85 yard touchdown pass. NC State 7 – Boston College 0

On the next Wolfpack possession, Jaylen Samuels would take it in from 5 yards out to suddenly turn a defensive struggle in to a 14 – 0 NC State lead. The way BC was executing on offense, one could see early on that a 14 point lead might be too much for the Eagles to overcome.

Sure enough, as the game wore on, the Wolfpack defense stiffened and the Boston College offense did very little. It wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter did Eagle freshman quarterback John Fadule finally get the offense moving. NC State came within 1:29 seconds of a 24-0 shutout. Instead, Fadule was able to pass to Thadd Smith for a 3 yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was good.

FINAL: NC State 24 – Boston College 8
