Stephen Curry goes off on Opening Night
Former Davidson Wildcat Stephen Curry wasted no time in reintroducing himself back to the NBA. The Golden State Warriors piled on to the New Orleans Pelicans on opening night. Curry had forty points overall and a twenty-four in the first quarter alone.
Curry was 14/26 from the field and 5/12 from three to produce that round forty number. He added six rebounds and seven assists for his total effort. It was a suitable beginning to a game that saw the Warriors receive their rings from winning the title last season. They should be the favorites to repeat as champs this year if they get another MVP effort from Curry.
Harrison Barnes turns down Warriors extension offer
In other Warrior news involving North Carolina ties, small forward Harrison Barnes and the Warriors could not come to terms on an extension. This means that Barnes will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Barnes is banking on receiving a big offer sheet next year in free agency with the big bump coming to the salary cap.
This does not mean that Barnes will be out the door for the Warriors. The Warriors can still match any deal presented to Barnes. There is no way to know exactly what the deals would look like. Barnes could be thinking he could get max money out of some team. The whole concept of max money got rewritten in the off season by the Tristan Thompson deal. A player does not need to be a max player to get max money.
Part of the issue with Barnes is determining what he wants his career to look like. His role with the Warriors will always be limited with Curry, Klay Thompson, and now Draymond Green around. Could he be more central to another team’s success? Do you walk away from a young team that started winning titles?
