Charlotte 49ers at Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders Preview

The Charlotte 49ers are sitting at (2-0) on the young season, having beaten a team from Georgia and a team from South Carolina to get there. This week, the 49ers try to add Tennessee to the list as they enter their first Conference USA game against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. This trip to Murfreesboro will be the first of many road trips for the 49ers in Conference USA and a chance to make an even bigger statement than their victory over Georgia State in Week 1.

X – Vegas likes Blue Raiders by THREE SCORES
During the Rick Stockstill era, the Blue Raiders have been known for high producing offenses whether they were in the Sun Belt or now in Conference USA. They had no trouble piling the points on Jackson State in Week 1, but got hammered by Bama’s defense in Week 2. One would have to believe the 49ers are closer to the former than the later, and thus the line. It isn’t easy being green, but have a heart, Vegas.

  • Y – Who’s the quarterback?
The idea that the quarterback controversy at Charlotte was over was wrong. The 49ers are still choosing between Matt Johnson and Brooks Barden. Barden will get the start this week, but Johnson will see work during the game. I am not a fan of platoons and belong to the ‘if you don’t have one quarterback, you don’t have any’ school. Hopefully, the 49ers can determine quickly who the better fit is and just go with him. I have to believe the staff is looking hard at Barden, since Johnson is the incumbent starter and should have had every opportunity to lock this job down.

    Z – Less Blake Brewer
This is not a knock on the 49ers kicker. Brewer has been a dependable weapon through two games. This is just how important it is for the 49ers to get touchdowns if they want to hang with the Blue Raiders. I cannot emphasize enough how big a step this is over Georgia State in week 1. Brewer was the main weapon in that game, and if he is again the 49ers will lose.

    Prediction: 35-21 Middle Tennessee
