A lot of the talk out of training camp since my last update has focused on a few players that are new to the Carolina Panthers.

Let us start with Cameron Artis-Payne and the fact that he has looked extremely good in practices so far this training camp. Many local media point out his ability to be patient and look for holes in the defense set up by his blockers. He was my favorite pick in terms of potential to have an immediate impact and also in terms of value where he was picked at. Nobody leads the SEC in rushing and is a bad player it just never happens. I have heard about his tackle shedding ability which is a must have if you are not a fast running back (Artis-Payne is not a speed running back). I have seen how much Auburn fans love him too which tells me fans will grow to love him too in Carolina.

More from Carolina Panthers

I am still hearing questions about Michael Oher and whether he can be the starting left tackle for the Panthers. As of right now I am leaning toward him being the left tackle to start the season but I think Daryl Williams will take that spot at left tackle by the end of the year. Williams was a name I was hearing a lot over the week because for a few snaps he played at left tackle and people at the practice thought he did really well. Williams has the size and the agility in my opinion to play there but his technique will have to improve quite a bit from his college days to take the leap to left tackle from right tackle. If he can do that there is no reason that this offensive line could not have a good year overall.

  • According to media at training camp Devin Funchess is proving his value to the Panthers already and he looks like he could have a big rookie season opposite of Kelvin Benjamin. Funchess is never going to be a burner but his size along with his route running (which I think is better then he is given credit for) makes him dangerous as the number two option. Funchess did have some injury issues before training camp but it seems like he is fine now. He did bruise his shoulder during a recent practice but seems to be okay.

I will keep everyone up to date on Thompson and other training camp news in the next update which will be out next week.
