The Charlotte 49ers are entering Division FBS football this year in Conference USA. That makes seven teams from the state of North Carolina in the FBS. Although transition went rather well for the Appalachian State Mountaineers last season, the 49ers will be starting their FBS campaign in the bottom of everyone’s thoughts.
The Conference USA’s media poll occurred way back in July, but it had no good news for the 49ers. It picked the new guys to finish dead last in the thirteen team league, well back from Western Kentucky, the Eastern favorite.

Western Kentucky’s appearance at the top of the Conference USA polls is notable because it is at odds with the Amway Coaches Poll. The national poll liked Marshall better but the local guys seem to prefer the Hilltoppers. Louisiana Tech is the current leader in the Western Division.
Just how well the season will go for the 49ers is hard to judge. They did not have an impressive season last year during that last foray with FCS ball. Most of that team will be returning for this inaugural campaign. Then again, App State turned a four win season in FCS into a seven win FBS opening season.

Their closest in-conference competition will likely be from Old Dominion, if only because the Monarchs are just two years into FBS play themselves. The Monarchs were slotted just in front of the 49ers in the Media Poll. The 49ers also play the Texas San Antonio Roadrunners. The Roadrunners were picked to finish last in the other division of Conference USA. That represents another matchup to watch for the new guys.
