Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship yesterday. This was not just a normal victory, but a dominating win. McIlroy won by seven shots over the likes of local favorite Webb Simpson. Yet the real story of McIlroy’s tournament was his performance on Saturday, where McIlroy blew away the field with a round three 61.

  • It was not the first time McIlroy had won the Wells Fargo. He became the first two time winner of the tournament.

Nor was it the first time that McIlroy had set the course record at Quail Hollow Country Club. McIlroy had set the course record at 62 previously, tied with local resident Brendan De Jonge. Now he owns that record anew.

What McIlroy did was make himself the early favorite for the US Open. Mother’s Day seems so recent, but the golf calendar is already looking ahead to Father’s Day weekend. The Wells Fargo is the closest thing to a prep event that the US Open has. If McIlroy brings another performance like Saturday’s to Chamber’s Bay, then watch out.

McIlroy’s weekend at Quail Hollow has been part of a whole year of great golf. He has won several tournaments and two majors in that year. What was the event that started McIlroy down this path of stellar golf? As Kyle Porter of CBS Sports pointed, it was his breakup with Caroline Wozniacki, the female tennis star.

  • That storyline of newfound success after a breakup is not new in sports. In 2005, Sean May reportedly broke up with his girlfriend before turning on a basketball performance that took North Carolina to the title this year.

The field is pretty open for McIlroy. His peer challengers like Rickie Fowler or Jordan Spieth do not have quite the same mix of game that the Northern Irish carries with him. While the US Open is usually the great equalizer for professional golfers, it is also the tournament where a golfer can run away and hide from the rest of the field.
