The NBA Draft Combine is coming up on May 12th in Chicago and the full list of the participants has been announced. The NBA Combine is like its NFL counterpart, and players who are not happy with their current draft projection can try to improve their stock here. This would include players coming off of injury or players overshadowed by their teammates.

  • The Combine is a risk of a poor performance too, and sometimes the biggest names in the draft pool do not show up for it, much like quarterback prospects refuse to throw at the NFL Combine. This year Duke’s Jahlil Okafor is not attending the Combine process. Okafor entered the Draft process as a consensus top two pick. His team has decided there is nothing to gain from being there.

Several other local players are going to be at the Combine, and some of them are also likely to be high picks. The local prospects include:

    Quinn Cook, Duke
    Tyus Jones, Duke
    JP Tokoto, North Carolina
    Justise Winslow, Duke

While Winslow and Jones are trying to build upon or solidify their first round positioning, the real interest will be in the performances of Cook and Tokoto. Both of those two will be looking for good Combine performances to put them solidly in the draft order.

  • Tokoto is particularly banking on a strong combine performance to show off his athleticism. A poor showing for Tokoto at the Combine would be something of a surprise. For Tokoto, the real challenge of the draft process will be individual team workouts where he can show improvement with skills.

Behind Okafor and Karl-Anthony Towns, the Draft is rather bunched up and teams will need some information to make a choice between one guy or another. Right in the middle of those picks will be the Charlotte Hornets, so expect the Hornets to particular active in covering the combine.
