North Carolina Tar Heels to open BBall Season in Veterans Classic
Regardless of what the roster for the North Carolina Tar Heels looks like, they are already setting up next year’s schedule. That will include a trip to Annapolis to play in the Veterans Classic. The season opening series will include possible games against Navy, Temple, and/or Florida.

Coach Roy Williams has always been big on supporting the troops, and this is another way for him to show his appreciation. Williams and the Tar Heels competed against Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans in the first game played on an aircraft carrier back in 2011. The humidity killed the three point shooting, but the Tar Heels were able to entertain servicemen with a victory.

Williams said, “It’s a tremendous honor for Carolina basketball to visit the Naval Academy and play in an event that pays tribute to the brave men and women who safeguard our country.”
The basketball is only part of the trip for the participating teams. They will also be shown around the Annapolis Navy Yard and witness the educational structure of the United States Naval Academy.
The game will be played on November 13, a Friday, on the CBS Sports Network. That is a great get for the channel that gets less attention than it perhaps deserves.

While the Heels will likely be the biggest ticket to the event, there will also be some Gator drama. Billy Donovan issued a statement from Florida about how neat it would be for the team to go there. What is not certain is if Donovan will be there himself.
Donovan has been connected to the open vacancy with the Oklahoma City Thunder by reports from Yahoo Sports and ESPN. It could very well be that Donovan never sees Annapolis in November, which would the additional story line of how his replacement and kids would handle it.
