  • Mickelson is coming off a great Masters performance that would have won most Masters. His -14 score was just not good enough this particular year. Jordan Spieth took the Masters at a near record -18, and Phil was tied for second with Justin Rose.

The golf calendar is driven by the major tournaments, and Phil’s next shot at one will be the US Open in June. At 44, Phil is reaching the no man’s land of winning major tournaments. The oldest major winner is still Jack Nicklaus from the 1986 Masters. He was 46. Golf is a different game now, and the fitness regimens of players may extend their competitive careers so that the Nicklaus mark is not an impediment.

Preparation for the US Open has everything to do with playing at the Wells Fargo Championship. The course is arranged in US Open fashion with narrow fairways and difficult placements. It is good practice for anyone looking to be ready in June regardless of where the US Open may be played.

Phil has been a consistent performer is his appearances in Charlotte, though he has never walked away with the trophy itself. If his Masters experience is any indicator, Phil will be ready to play at a high level when he gets here.

The Wells Fargo Championship prides itself on becoming a destination tournament that consistently gets the biggest golfers in the sport. The folks at Quail Hollow are also trying to put on good shows in preparation for the coming of the PGA Championship in 2017.
