Carolina Panthers add Boykin and Martin

The Carolina Panthers decided to make it a busy free agent Saturday by acquiring two players. They signed Jarrett Boykin, formerly of the Green Bay Packers. They also claimed tackle Jonathan Martin off of waivers from the San Francisco 49ers.

Boykin is a Butler High product in his fourth year in the League. He played for Virginia Tech in college. He is 6’2” 218 lbs which is better size at the position than the Panthers were looking at with Greg Jennings. Boykin has spent the three previous years in Green Bay where he saw his most action in 2013, when the Packers were looking to fill the spot vacated by the aforementioned Jennings.
Boykin is a depth grab at a position where the Panthers need it. He can also provide special teams help as Marc Sessler at Around the NFL noted.

Martin’s acquisition is the more obvious move of the two, because the Panthers need tackle help badly. Martin marks the second tackle that the Panthers have picked in free agency behind Michael Oher.
Martin did see a lot of action last year as injuries hit the 49ers offensive line and the Stanford product started nine games last year. Martin was released by the 49ers as a cash move, but may also have been related to his closeness to former Coach Jim Harbaugh.

Martin’s contract is not onerous and is not guaranteed. If he fails to work out here, then the Panthers could cut him with no penalty.
General manager Dave Gettleman continues to set the stage for what will be a fascinating Panthers draft. Every move like these shores up a problem spot for the team. They also open the possibility to the Panthers doing just about anything with their first round pick. Wonder why they worked out Todd Gurley…
Oh it is nice to know that at least the Panthers will not be drafting a quarterback. Every team at the top of the draft has seemed to suggest they are looking at quarterback to sucker some poor team trying to move up. Don’t have to worry about that.
