Is Mike Glennon still the future in Tampa?

For the second off-season in a row, Mike Glennon sits atop the Tampa Bay Buccaneers depth chart at quarterback. For the second straight off-season it seems like a coin toss that he will keep that position. Last year, new coach Lovie Smith brought in veteran Josh McCown to be his quarterback. Smith was unimpressed with the results and the team walked away from McCown just a couple of weeks ago. This means it is Mike Glennon’s time, right?

Well, not necessarily. Today is the second day of the NFL Combine and it is highly rumored that the true starter for next year’s Bucs is on that field. The Bucs have the first pick in the draft and there are two quarterback prospects that are considered to be big time potentials at the position. Their names are Jameis Winston of the Florida State Seminoles and Marcus Mariota of the Oregon Ducks.

Winston and Mariota represent two sides of the spectrum in the development of college quarterbacks. Winston is the more pro-style mold. He is 6’4” and 230 lbs. He has the arm that scouts look for. He is also an off-field wild-card, known more hijinx than his Heisman trophy and National Championship victory. Winston has a pro body, but he might have Johnny Manziel’s attitude.

  • Mariota has the other problem. He was productive in the Oregon spread system and therefore has to overcome the label of a system quarterback. He at least has good size at 6’4” and 219 lbs. There will be questions about well Mariota will fit in a pro offense, though there will be no questions of his off the field activities.

If I was Tampa, I would trade the first pick to someone desperate for one of these two guys. Smith has no track record of developing young quarterbacks. Get some more picks to build up the rest of the team, because Smith is a defense first guy. Neither Mariota or Winston is true number one pick territory, and it might be possible to snag one or the other if the Bucs could stay high in the draft.

Personally I would like an RGIII type deal with Philadelphia to snag more picks. I haven’t given up on Glennon yet and he is not a mentor type. That the team moved on from McCown and kept Glennon has to mean SOMETHING.
