Charlton Warren becomes next UNC Defense Hire?
The North Carolina Tar Heels finished their defensive coaching staff hires by bringing over Nebraska’s defensive backs coach Charlton Warren to presumably take over the same duties in Chapel Hill according to reports from Greg Barnes at Insidecarolina. Warren is only 38 and already as a resume that includes six years as the defensive coordinator at Air Force. He was also the recruiting coordinator at Air Force during six years of his time there.

To give you an idea of Warren’s worth, he was the only coach retained by new Nebraska coach Mike Riley when the team fired Bo Pelini and brought Riley over from Oregon State. Warren has natural connections to John Papuchis, who was brought in by Gene Chizik to UNC and served as Warren’s boss on defense for the last few years at Nebraska.
Warren represents the third new defensive coach brought in. Only Keith Gilmore remains from last year’s defense. Warren will have arguably the easiest job in the new scheme since he will have an abundance of defensive backs to figure out how to use. The hardest part of his new job will be determining which ones need to become linebackers. A couple will have to make that move.

Warren also continues a trend set by Chizik and Papuchis of bringing in big time recruiters to the program. Warren has ties to Georgia that will no doubt be important for the success of future recruiting. The addition of Papuchis and Warren also made the staff younger, as both men are under forty. Whether that means an injection of energy remains to be seen.
This completes the defensive makeover at the coaching level. The next major work for the North Carolina Tar Heels will be to make their player personnel fit the new ideas that want to operate on defense. That will likely come with Spring Practice.
