On Thursday night the NC State Wolfpack lost another hard-fought contest…this time to the Miami Hurricanes 65-60.  The game, played at Bank United Center in Coral Gables, Florida was the Wolfpack’s second Florida game in a week.  On January 17th the Pack defeated Florida State in Tallahassee  72-63.  NC State coach Mark Gottfried was hoping for a clean sweep in the Sunshine State, but Jim Larranaga and his Miami squad had other ideas.  With the win, Miami improved to  13-5 overall and  3-2 in conference play.

NC State (13-7, 4-3) started the game in unique fashion as freshman Abdul-Malik Abu single-handedly kept the Wolfpack afloat with outstanding post play.   Abu scored NC State’s first 12 points as the rest of his team struggled from the field.

Ralston Turner would hit a late first 3-point jumper from the left side to open up a 31-24 lead and add to a 13-0 run with a little more than a minute remaining in the first half. After two Miami free throws, the Pack got the ball back and ended the half with a well executed back door baseline pass from Cat Barber to BeeJay Anya for the two-handed dunk.  NC State closed the half on a 15-2 run… a perfect ending to a very good first half performance.   Abu had 14 first half points.

The second half turned sour for the Wolfpack.  As well as NC State ended the first half, they played equally as poor to start the second allowing the Hurricanes to erase the deficit and retake the lead.

Turner got hot late in the game hitting two 3-pointers in the final 1:33 to get the Pack within one point.  Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, a third one that would have taken the lead, bounced off the rim ending their best opportunity to win the game.  Miami would hold on in the remaining seconds for the victory.
