Catching up with the Carolina Hurricanes

This season for the Carolina Hurricanes has been a turbulent one, to say the least. Marred by injuries and inconsistent play early on, the team seems to have picked things back up near the end of the first half.

Could Carolina be on track for a miracle second half run to the playoffs?

Where They Stand

The ‘Canes find themselves in last in the Metropolitan Division at the All-Star break, with a record of 16-25-5 and only 37 points to their credit.

However, they finished the first half strong, winning three of their last five including a close one-goal loss to the impressive St. Louis Blues on the road.

Staying or Staaling?

This all has come since the return of Jordan Staal to the fold after his early-season injury. Meanwhile the other Staal (Eric) has had rumors about his possible departure.

He’s since come out and stated his commitment to the team to this season, and could very well be back next year if the front office will allow it. He leads the team in both goals and points, and probably will lead in those categories when it’s all said and done.

The other holdover from the Stanley Cup squad is Cam Ward, who has been splitting goaltending duties with the younger Anton Khudobin. Both have been about on par, and have had their respective great nights. A two-headed monster in the net could be vital for the ‘Canes down the stretch.

At the same time, could Carolina do without one for a trade? Sure, but don’t take it from me…our pals over at Cardiac Cane explained why they think Cam Ward is a tradeable asset recently.

Justin Case

Justin Faulk has done a good bit for a guy who’s 22 years old.

Named to the U.S. Olympic Team last year and now picked to the All-Star Game, he’s sure to be a household name in Carolina for a least a couple more years.

He leads the team in assists with 18 so far this year, and is steadily improving as the season goes on.

What’s On Tap

Carolina gets a quick break before heading back out on the ice on Tuesday night against regional rivals Tampa Bay at the PNC Arena. It’s a big one too, because it’ll be on NBC Sports Network and will give the red and black a chance to make a statement against the Lightning.

They’ll then get a home rematch with the Blues and then a trip to MSG to take on the Rangers soon after.
