Carolina Panthers Kick Past Tampa, 19-17

The Carolina Panthers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today to keep their playoff chances alive. Atlanta lost to Pittsburgh and now the Panthers are hoping that the Chicago Bears pull it together enough to beat the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers had more control over the game than the 19-17 score suggests, but the Panthers had difficulty turning field goals into touchdowns.

The Kicker

The fantasy Panther that you wanted to have turned out to be not Jonathan Stewart or Derek Anderson but kicker Graham Gano. Gano was the first Panther to score and he was the last Panther to score. He kicked four field goals in total as the Panthers stalled out on certain drives. Gano did miss a kick, so he was not perfect.

Derek Anderson beats the Buc, Chapter 2

Derek Anderson played solidly with a 25 for 40 throwing day. He had 277 yards and a touchdown pass to Jericho Cotchery that served to put the Panthers back into the lead at 16-10. His two preferred target were tight end Greg Olsen and Kelvin Benjamin. Olsen caught ten balls for 110 yards. Benjamin had eight balls for 104 yards.

Turnovers played their part to preserve the Panthers victory. Middle linebacker Luke Kuechly had an interception. Tampa Bay quarterback Josh McCown fumbled away the football twice, once to Bene Benwikere and once to Kawann Short.

For the Bucs, running back Doug Martin had a decent day with 96 rushing yards, but there was no big performance by rookie receiver Mike Evans to stir the pot a little.
The Panthers may have been helped or hurt by the Cincinnati Bengals this week. On the one hand, the Bengals’ 30-0 victory over Cleveland provided lots of tape on how to stop the Cleveland offense. On the other hand, the Browns will be highly motivated when they arrive next Sunday.
