Philly Brown of the Carolina Panthers has suffered a right sprained shoulder according to a report by Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer. The injury occurred during the victory over the Saints and Brown is currently marked at day to day.

Brown, the rookie wide receiver from Ohio State, has become a bigger piece of the offense as the season has gone on. He is probably the only legitimate deep threat on the roster, although Kelvin Benjamin may disagree with that.

His presence has seen the Panthers offense at least try to open up the field in the last two weeks. This is one of the reasons that the team was okay with cutting Jason Avant, defenses were not really scared of Avant running past them.

Brown is also the punt returner. Given the Panthers’ difficulty to fill that position in recent years, it would be good to know that he will be back there instead of someone untested.

The best case scenario is for Brown to return quickly and be on the field for Tampa Bay. If that is looking less likely, the Panthers would be better off letting Brenton Bersin handle his duties rather than sticking Brown on the IR. The Panthers are going to need Brown later on, so the IR list is out of the question.

Another option may be for the Panthers to cut another player in order to promote Stephen Hill off of the practice squad if Brown’s injury is more serious. Hill would certainly be looking to prove himself after a lackluster beginning with the New York Jets.
