WBTV in Charlotte reported that the police that were on the scene said he had no injuries. No doubt Newton’s mental state is a little banged up after going through that kind of ordeal. Newton was placed on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a local hospital for safety reasons.
At this time, just north of 3:00 PM, it is still too early to say precisely what happened in the wreck or how Newton is doing. The Panthers do play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in Charlotte. It would be ironic if backup quarterback Derek Anderson had to start that game since he was also in the saddle for the season opener against Tampa Bay.

Much of the Panthers’ season has been built on Newton and the unique things that he can do as a quarterback. This has been particularly true with the Panthers offensive line being the project that it is. Losing Newton would no doubt end any hopes the Panthers hold for the playoffs.
On the other hand, it will be interesting to see how Newton treats this incident/accident. If he is okay and comes back, does he try even harder as if he has had a message from God? Or does this batter his myth of invincibility in such a way that he is never the same player again? Both scenarios seem unlikely, I think that Cam will be back to being Cam pretty quick as long as he is not injured more seriously than the police described.
Just another day in a strange Panthers season. I think Coach Rivera must be getting tired of press conferences by now.
