ACC Championship: Seminoles trip Jackets 37-35

The ACC Championship was won by the Florida State Seminoles last night to seal their undefeated season. Like every Florida State game this year, it was a lot more exciting than most Seminoles fans would have wanted. Still 37-35 is a win, and the Seminoles are in prime positioning to reach the College Football Playoff. Which means I need to run through one final set of bowl projections.

Georgia Tech started the game the way that it wanted to, by scoring every time in longish drives up through the middle of the second quarter. The Florida State defense stop on the next Georgia Tech drive started to flip the script. Jameis Winston threw his third touchdown pass and Florida State had the lead 28-21 going into the half.

More from North Carolina Sports

Georgia Tech is not really designed to make comebacks, and Florida State’s defense made the necessary adjustments that allowed Roberto Aguayo to make three field goals stand up. That nine point differential was ultimately too much for the Jackets, even though they did score a final touchdown with two minutes to go and attempted an onside kick.

Winston threw for over 309 yards in the game. He was aided by Dalvin Cook who added 177 rushing yards to the party. Rashad Greene was the preferred target of the day with 123 receiving yards and two scores.
Georgia Tech is all about rushing statistics. Quarterback Justin Thomas had 104 yards rushing. Synjyn Days had three touchdowns. In total the Yellow Jackets had over 300 yards rushing.

  • Florida State is likely headed to the playoff. For FSU, currently ranked fourth in the playoff rankings, they are likely looking at playing against #1 Alabama or #2 Oregon. That means that the TCU-Baylor-Ohio State debate will not play FSU in the first round of the playoff.

Georgia Tech is likely headed to the Orange Bowl, where they will likely face Michigan State if the rankings hold. Michigan State is the kind of defensive team that Georgia Tech does not want to see in a game. The Spartans will have a month to figure out the option as well.
