Panthers Cut Antoine Cason, Jason Williams

The Carolina Panthers have cut cornerback Antoine Cason and backup linebacker Jason Williams for miscues that resulted during the Minnesota Vikings game according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.
Cason was brought in this season to man a cornerback spot, and his play has been less than exciting. Williams blew a blocking assignment on one of the blocked punts that the Vikings returned for a touchdown.

There are several ways to understand what is going on here, so here are the possibilities:

1.The Panthers are trying to use the axe to motivate players into salvaging the season.
This does not seem very likely because there do not seem to be anybody to replace these guys with other than guys that did not beat them out in camp. Still, if I was in fear of getting cut, then maybe my play would improve somewhat. Seems like that would take a mental price though.

2.The Panthers are in “Spaghetti Mode”
Things not going right? Don’t know what to do next? Try anything. Cason’s replacement will be Bene Benwikere, who has played well enough. He just wasn’t the starting corner up to now. Thomas DeCoud has been benched for North Carolina rookie Tre Boston. Maybe somebody on that depth chart will stick and provide better play than the guys out there right now. The Panthers secondary just got a whole lot younger.

I am more inclined to believe in number 2 than number 3. Number 3 says that you bench your temp veterans in favor of your younger players and ride out the season. It is not a road that a playoff bound team normally takes. That’s why I still lean toward desperation over pragmatism.

Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, I believe that calls for Ron Rivera’s head are premature. The roster needs fixing, not the coach. Don’t believe for a second that Jim Harbaugh or Chip Kelly would winning games with this team in its current form.
