Romar Morris Suspended for Pitt game
Harold Gutmann of the Durham Herald Tribune reports that North Carolina Tar Heels junior running back Romar Morris was arrested last Sunday morning by the Chapel Hill police and charged with a misdemeanor DWI.
Morris has since been suspended for the Pitt game which will come up next weekend. That reduces the available Tar Heel running backs to two, though it is possible that freshman Elijah Hood will be healthy after the bye week. That is just a guess, since there is no official information on Hood’s status.
The Tar Heel running back situation is a complex one. It reminds me of the 2003 season when the Tar Heels had four running backs that they liked, but not one that they ultimately trusted. The Bunting regime back then could not decide between senior Willie Parker, junior Jacque Lewis, transfer Chad Scott, or freshman Ronnie McGill. McGill sort of won out, because he was less of a clone of the others and had a big day against Wake Forest.

The next year there was more of a commitment to McGill, but it took injuries to destroy the three back system entirely. When the dust settled, there was only Chad Scott against Miami. Scott showed what a running back can do with some carries and a little momentum in the big upset. He remained the main back for the rest of that season, with McGill as the change of pace guy.
The Tar Heels have several different weapons at tailback, but they really need to commit to one or two of those guys. Right now the healthy back rotation is TJ Logan and Khris Francis. That would be fine, because I think two backs is ideal. When Hood comes back, there needs to be serious consideration of developing a two back system. Morris could be the scat back on third downs.
