Charlotte 49ers Football Update: 11/6
It has been a little while since we looked at the FCS picture in football, but the upcoming college basketball and NBA seasons sort of ate at my resources. I can share some thoughts on the Charlotte 49ers though. David Scott of the Charlotte Observer reports that starting quarterback Matt Johnson is still week-to-week after an MCL tear against James Madison.

The injury comes at a particularly bad time as the 49ers are about to play FCS power Coastal Carolina. The good news is that Coastal is the last difficult game on the schedule. The 49ers will play Wesley College and Pioneer League member Morehead State in the last two weeks of their season.
It has been an interesting year for the Charlotte 49ers, as they were expected to do more and just have not risen that high. For a team that is going to Conference USA, one would think that they need to be further along. However it is important to remember this is still only their second year of existence. They have played a number of close games, taking Charleston Southern and the Citadel to overtime. They have lost to a couple of underperforming teams in Elon and Gardner-Webb.

Next year their competition is going to ramp up, and they will be playing the Southern Miss Eagles, not the North Carolina Central Eagles. There will be Marshall and UAB on the schedule for them. That will be the true test. One only has to look at Boone where Appalachian State went 4-8 in its final year in FCS and now sits 3-5 in the Sun Belt after several weeks of getting bashed.
