Cam Newton Needs Help, Not Trust
Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer reported on a few responses from quarterback Cam Newton. One of things that Newton said was ‘every game is a must win now.’ That sentiment is true but it is also late. It is late by a full week. Last week’s game against New Orleans was a must win game too. If that game had been won, then the Panthers would have controlled their own destiny for another week. Now the fate of the Panthers is largely in the hands of the New Orleans Saints, who own the divisional lead.

Newton pointed out that he had to ‘trust the system’ more as a quarterback. That is fine, but how is Cam supposed to trust the offensive line that is just a step away from being Larry, Moe, and Curly? Cam is aware that the Panthers’ season rests firmly on his shoulders. The team has no other options to take the pressure off of him. Without solid line play, there is no running game. Teams are bringing guys up, knowing that Cam won’t have time to beat them with the deep ball.
So if Cam believes that trusting the system is the way to go, fine. If pretending the pass rush is not coming will open the field, then also fine. I think it is important to note that Cam cannot play tackle, defensive end, or safety. All of those areas have been at issue at some point this season.

Until the line play, on both lines, improves then it is pointless to talk about whether or not Cam’s play has been the problem. Whether it has or it hasn’t, he is IT. He is all the team has going for it right now. If the Panthers somehow manage to plant their flag on the NFC South, it will be because Cam Newton got them there.
