The ‘Canes finally got some shots midway through the period on a power play, despite not scoring on nice puck movement in the offensive zone.
The second period started out very much like the first one did, as the Rangers got plenty of scoring opportnities on two power plays in the first six minutes.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes were limited again early on in the second stanza but slowly brought themselves back up with a goal from Chris Terry near the end of the period to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.
The score also gave Carolina their first lead of the entire season heading into second intermission.
The Rangers finally got on the board near the midway point of the third period, as a shot from Daniel Giradi was defelcted in by Derick Brassard and found its way in to tie the game.
The tie lasted throughout regulation, and Carolina went to overtime for the second straight game. A winner couldn’t be decided in the extra period, and so the ‘Canes also went into a shootout for the second game in a row.
Both teams were stalled until the third round when New York’s Rick Nash made a wily move past Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin to get what would be the game-deciding goal.
In the loss, however, Khudobin was solid in the net for the Hurricanes. He totaled up 24 saves and bailed out his team on multiple turnovers that brought New York into the zone.
The usual backup came up big on saves throughout the night, but also got help from various teammates on 22 blocked shots in the zone as the speedy Rangers closed in.
Carolina’s usual susepects on offense were also limited tonight. Alex Semin still didn’t look like himself on the ice, and Nathan Gerbe left the game late with what the team called lower-body injury.
As a team, Carolina won a majority of the faceoffs (44/67), but also had 12 penalty minutes in the game. The Rangers finished the game with a four-shot advantage in total shots, and also had six more hits.
The Hurricanes (0-4-2) will get a break from action and hope to get some bodies back before heading to Winnipeg to take on the Jets on Tuesday.
