FBS Preview: College Football Week 4

facebooktwitterreddit

It is a full slate in this week’s FBS Preview. Every FBS team in the state will be playing this weekend. The Duke Blue Devils and NC State Wolfpack will be trying to improve to 4-0 in their respective schedules. Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons will be trying to show the lessons they have learned from their previous games. The big game of the week has to be the North Carolina Tar Heels paying a visit to the East Carolina Pirates in Greenvile. This game has become so important for the ambitions of both schools this season.

More from North Carolina Sports

Saturday- 9/20

Duke Blue Devils (3-0) vs Tulane Green Wave (1-2)

Time: 12:30 PM
TV: ESPN 3 (Online) and Gameplan (PPV)

The Blue Devils were impressive in way they blew out Kansas and unveiled freshman running back Shaun Wilson. Now they receive a visit from another Southern private school. The Green Wave have lost their first two games, only beating FCS Southeast Louisiana last week. They held close to Georgia Tech for a half, before the Yellow Jackets pulled it together. Duke has a more complete squad than Georgia Tech right now.

North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0) at East Carolina Pirates (2-1)

Time: 3:30 PM
TV: ESPNU

For East Carolina it all comes down to this. UNC represents the last real chance to boost their resume before conference play and is necessary to make this a truly special season. They were close at South Carolina, and pulled a late trigger at Virginia Tech. Will the Pirates finally get into the polls with a victory?

For North Carolina, this game is all about getting the taste of last year’s blowout loss out of their mouths. The Heels barely survived the San Diego Aztecs and are coming out of a bye week. Will an extra week of preparation be the ingredient for this team to prove that it deserves that top 25 ranking?

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (1-2) vs Army Black Knights (1-1)

Time: 3:30 PM
TV: ESPN3 (Online)

Can Wake Forest stop the run? That will be the big question as triple option attack Army comes in to play at BB&T Field. The Wake Forest defense has played pretty well over the first three weeks. The Wake Forest offense will need to hold the ball and make few mistakes. Wake does not want to chase down a triple option attack that has the lead.

The Wolfpack are full of confidence coming off their win over South Florida. Now they get to use that confidence on an FCS squad in Presbyterian. So they should have even more confidence after this game. The Blue Hose did beat traditional FCS contender Furman last week, so they are not hapless. Still it is hard to see them keeping pace on the scoreboard without lots of things going wrong.

Appalachian State Mountaineers (1-1) at Southern Miss Eagles (1-2)

    Time: 7:00 PM

This is the week that we see if Appalachian State learned the lessons of the loss to Michigan in week 1, because Campbell really was not a fair test. App State has had a bye week to boot, so they should be super ready for the Southern Miss Eagles. Southern Miss still hasn’t quite recovered from the end of the Larry Fedora era. This year they are 1-0 against FCS teams and 0-2 against SEC teams. I think it is fair to say that they are looking forward to this game as well.
