Week 3 will be a quieter week for the FBS teams in the state as both the North Carolina Tar Heels and Appalachian State Mountaineers will be off. That does not mean that the other games are any less interesting. The deeper we get into the season, the more conference rivalries will start to pop up. This week all of the remaining teams will be taking on tests from outside their conferences. Again they all play on Saturday. This is the FBS preview.

Saturday: 9/13
East Carolina Pirates (1-1) at Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0)
Time: 12:00 PM
TV: ESPN
The Pirates go from one hostile environment to another as they visit Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. The Hokies are #18 in the country and resurgent after defeating Ohio State. Ohio State was still growing their redshirt freshman quarterback though. The Pirates will be bringing in senior Shane Carden. Last year the Hokies were able to stifle the ECU offense. Have the Pirates learned something from that game tape?
Duke Blue Devils (2-0) vs Kansas Jayhawks (1-0)
Time: 3:30 PM
TV: ESPN3 (Online Stream) and PPV on Gameplan
An intriguing early season matchup pitting Mike Krzyzewski and Bill Self. Looking for a big game from Jahlil Okafor. I just wonder why it’s on ESPN3? Oh it’s football. I have to stop doing this. Charlie Weis comes to Durham with his underperforming Jayhawk team. If Duke takes them seriously, unlike the first quarter against Troy, then this won’t be any problem.

Garnet and Cocky
North Carolina State Wolfpack (2-0) at South Florida Bulls (1-1)
Time: 3:30 PM
TV: CBS Sports Network
South Florida has played two close games, one with Western Carolina and one with Maryland. They lost to Maryland. Maryland beat State last year. Is this the week that Dave Doeren’s squad comes out and just plays or will this this be yet another wild finish? Willie Taggart’s pro-style system will be the third difference offense that State has seen this season.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons (1-1) at Utah State Aggies (1-1)
Time: 7:00 PM
TV: CBS Sports Network
Hold on to your butts. The Demon Deacons have not played an offense as explosive as the spread of Utah State under quarterback Chucky Keeton. The Wake Forest defense will depend on its veteran leadership to keep the game close so that the tepid Wake offense can find a way to win it.
