FBS Preview: College Football Week 2

facebooktwitterreddit

Week 2 of the College Football season is coming, and all of the FBS schools in the state are playing on Saturday. If a school played a FCS school last week, then it is playing a low level non-conference foe this week. If they played a low level non-conference opponent last week, then they are most likely playing a FCS team this week. The major exception to this is East Carolina, which goes to Columbia to face a wounded and angry South Carolina team.

Saturday- 9/6

NC State Wolfpack (1-0) vs Old Dominion Monarchs (1-0)
Time– 6:00 PM
TV– ESPN3 (Online Stream)

The Wolfpack are fresh off their last minute victory over Georgia Southern. Now they turn to another school that recently moved to FBS, Old Dominion. There will be no triple option threat this Saturday for NC State and the Monarchs should go down more easily than the Eagles.

Appalachian State Mountaineers (0-1) vs Campbell Camels (0-1)
Time– 6:00 PM
TV– ESPN3 (Online Stream)

The Mountaineers return from the Big House to patch up the wounds with a visit for the FCS Camels. Campbell is from the non-scholarship Pioneer League of FCS, so all the players are walk-ons. This will give the Mountaineers a chance to rebuild their confidence from their huge defeat at Michigan.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (0-1) vs Gardner Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs (0-1)
Time– 6:30 PM
TV– ESPN3 (Online Stream)

Wake Forest likewise gets to return home and face a FCS team in order to get some confidence back after a dismal offensive showing against Louisiana-Monroe. The Wake defense played well enough that they should be able to suppress the Bulldog offense, but John Wolford and his support will need to score points.

  • East Carolina Pirates (1-0) at South Carolina Gamecocks (0-1)
    Time– 7:00 PM
    TV– ESPNU

The big game this week is between the Pirates and the Gamecocks. The Pirates looked hot in their blowout of the NC Central Eagles. South Carolina just looked blown away when dealing with the Kevin Sumlin spread of Texas A&M. The Pirates bring in a similar offensive system to Sumlin’s. Will that be good or bad news against a hurt and prideful South Carolina team?

Duke Blue Devils (1-0) at Troy Trojans (0-1)
    Time– 7:00 PM
    TV– ESPN3 (Online Stream)

Troy surprised a bunch of people when it was blown out by UAB. No one has feared UAB in some time, and head coach Garrick McGee left the team to become the offensive coordinator for Bobby Petrino in Louisville. Needless to say, I do not expect Troy to ambush Duke down in Alabama. Duke played Elon by the book, and I expect them to do the same here.

North Carolina Tar Heels (1-0) vs San Diego State Aztecs (1-0)
    Time– 8:00 PM
    TV– ESPNEWS

North Carolina will need to avoid the mistakes they made early against Liberty. The Aztecs were a bowl team last year and hail from the tough Mountain West. The good news is that the sun will not be in Ryan Switzer’s eyes when the game starts. Look for the key defensive matchup to be the running game of San Diego State against the Tar Heel defensive line.
