The state of North Carolina has a lot of football going on this weekend that extends beyond the FBS level. There are eight FCS teams that will be in action. Some of them will playing their big brothers in the FBS, but most will be playing other FCS schools.
Here is the schedule

Thursday – 8/28
Charlotte 49ers at Campbell Camels
Time– 7:00 PM
The Charlotte 49ers are beginning a transition period to the FBS level, which they will join next year. This year becomes one long tryout to see what they have when they make the jump. Campbell will try to remind them that there are still games to play this year.
Saturday – 8/30
Elon Phoenix at Duke Blue Devils
Time– 6:00 PM
TV– ESPN3 (Online Stream)
Two private schools do battle in Durham. Elon is an FCS school, so it has fewer scholarships to play with. Ideally, Duke will be able to test drive its offense and defense without too much trouble. However, no one really know how a team will play its first game. A few mistakes, and Elon could be right in it. This is also the first look at Duke without Kelby Brown and Braxton Deaver.

Western Carolina Catamounts at South Florida Bulls
Time– 7:00 PM
TV– ESPN3 (Online Stream)
The Catamounts travel down to Tampa to face the Bulls of South Florida. If South Florida coach Willie Taggart brings the team from last year, the Catamounts will have a chance for an upset if they play perfect football. If USF has gotten better, then do not ask for much.
Gardner-Webb Runnin-Bulldogs at Furman Paladins
Time– 7:00 PM
Davidson Wildcats vs College of Faith-Charlotte
Time– 7:00 PM
North Carolina Central Eagles at East Carolina Pirates
Time– 8:00 PM
TV– ESPNEWS
The Pirates start their season with FCS NC Central. Like Elon and Liberty, NC Central will be handicapped in terms of talent and personnel. Given the firepower of ECU, it’s likely that this game will not tell us very much about the Pirates. The biggest question mark is the offensive line, and it is unlikely to be tested by the NC Central front. If it is, that is a bad sign for later on with the Pirates.
