Raymond Felton Pleads Guilty to Illegal Gun Possession
The Associated Press reported yesterday that Dallas Mavericks guard Raymond Felton has pled guilty to the charge of attempted possession of an illegal firearm and possession of an illegal firearm in Manhattan State Supreme Court.
Felton was sentenced to 500 hours of community service and forced to pay a $ 5,000 fine. If Felton fully complies, he will not receive any jail time. The NBA commissioner Adam Silver has not indicated whether the league will take additional action.

Felton does not have to do the service in New York, meaning that he could do it in Dallas. Felton was traded from the New York Knicks to the Dallas Mavericks in a deal reached earlier this summer that included Tyson Chandler.
Felton’s unregistered semi-automatic gun was revealed to the police by his now estranged wife soon after she filed for divorce. One of the features that made the gun illegal was its possession of a magazine capable of shooting more than twenty rounds in a single clip.

Felton is coming off a disappointing season in New York last year, averaging only nine points and six assists in almost thirty-one minutes per game. His move to Dallas is probably the best thing for him, but nothing is guaranteed for him there. The Mavericks re-signed Devin Harris, a favorite of Dirk Nowitzki. They are also in negotiations with Jameer Nelson, formerly of the Orlando Magic.
Both of these moves suggest Felton will have to fight to show he is still a starting point guard in this league. One benefit that he does have is that Tyson Chandler was traded with him. Chandler proved an effective pick-and-roll partner for Felton in the past. Felton must report in shape and must be able to grasp coach Rick Carlisle’s philosophy quickly to make the best of things. Playing defense wouldn’t hurt either.
