Gilmore is currently the defensive line coach for the Fighting Illini. He has held this position for four years now. The Fighting Illini defense ranked 53rd overall in the nation in overall defensive rankings last season.
In 2011, Gilmore helped coach the Illinois defense to a top-10 ranking in passing defense, tackles for loss, total defense and sacks.
At Cincinnati (where he served as assistant head coach and defensive line coach) he led a defense to be ranked 8th in the country in sacks. The next season he helped coach the Bearcats into the Orange Bowl.

Gilmore will arrive in Chapel Hill to replace Deke Adams who left the North Carolina staff to work for Coach Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. Adams will be facing the Tar Heels in week one for the 2013 season when the Gamecocks host their northern rivals.
Gilmore is a solid fit for this position. With young players coming in, the work Gilmore has done with the likes of Anthony Hoke and Whitney Mercilus, these young Tar Heel defensive linemen should be excited.
