The North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Virginia to keep their season on track and improve to 6-2.

The North Carolina Tar Heels had several jobs to accomplish yesterday. They had to win to keep pace with Virginia Tech in the division. They had to gain bowl eligibility. They had to show more defensive backbone. They had to prove they could do big plays without Mack Hollins. They had to win a game without it being on the last play or drive of the game.

All things were accomplished as North Carolina beat Virginia as they should have, 35-14. The Cavaliers scored on a fake field goal and a fourth quarter score that ultimately didn’t matter. Taquan Mizzell tried to work his magic again, but the Cavaliers were still in transition to their new scheme.

The Tar Heels took control after half time. Elijah Hood had more than a hundred yards for the first time in a while. Bug Howard became an important part of the offense in the absence of Hollins. Mitch Trubisky had another solid game including a big pass to Austin Proehl. That was one of three touchdown passes and three hundred ten yards of passing.

More from North Carolina Tar Heels

Trubisky is starting to gain attention by the prognosticators. Dane Brugler of CBS Sports has the junior quarterback rated as the fourth pick in the 2017 draft going to the Chicago Bears. I am not sure I would be ready to see Trubisky leave just yet, but it is fair to note that most of his weapons and offensive line leave after this season.

The Tar Heels also gained bowl eligibility. The Citadel game would not have counted toward that number even if the Heels needed it since they beat James Madison earlier this year. They remained tied with the Hokies and need another team to knock off Virginia Tech in order to own the driver’s seat. The Hokies play Pitt next week.

North Carolina goes on bye next week before playing Georgia Tech the week after. At #22 in the polls now, the Tar Heels will likely be ranked when they play the Yellow Jackets.
