The Wake Forest Demon Deacons hope to return to their winning ways when Syracuse comes to visit.

There was a time when the reaction to a 4-1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons record after five game would yield “Put it on a Shirt!” Yet the Demon Deacons have gone 4-1 and that lone loss probably makes them wonder a little bit. After weeks of good defensive performances, Wake gave up more than 527 yards of total offense.

However you could make the case that if Wake could just have played a better first quarter, they could have played the Wolfpack to a 16-16 tie in the other three. However they gave up seventeen points in the first quarter and they never came back from that. It was a lesson that their offense still has to help them win games.

The team cannot get too down itself right now because a winnable game is on the docket for today. That would be the Syracuse Orange coming to town. The Orange have not scared anybody so far this year, but they did beat the Deacons last year. Wake will need to refocus any post State-hangover. The season did not end and the Deacs still have a lot to play for.

So how does one do that? How about by enlisting the aid of the recently deceased Arnold Palmer? Palmer knew something about winning and the Demon Deacons are trying to summon his ghost through a few memorial flourishes. The team will have Arnold Palmer helmet stickers and the field will have his logo painted on it.

In more pragmatic terms, the Deacons will have to take advantage of a defense giving up an average of 500 yards a game. They need to get back to their run first with a bit of passing mixed in that got them four wins. Do that and they could be playing for a bowl bid next week.
