The Carolina Panthers cut their roster down to 75 players, but that did not prevent them from adding a couple.

The Carolina Panthers take the field for the final time this preseason as they look to answer some final questions before the main course of the season begins. This process started with the Panthers trading for Cleveland Browns punter Andy Lee to close the issue at that position this upcoming season. It continues until the 53 man roster cut off on the eighth of September.

Another position that showed some weakness of the team was safety. Injuries hit the backup ranks at that position and the Panthers want to have at least one competent backup safety coming off the bench. This was what was so nice about having Tre Boston as the third man last year. Boston is a starter this year.

The Panthers signed veteran free agent Stevie Brown after working out some veterans at the position. One of the players the Panthers looked at was Donte Whitner, formerly of Ohio State. Brown has not seen game action in two years, so hopefully he will be fresh when the Panthers call his number.

More from Carolina Panthers

The Panthers had to get down to 75 men by today and they began the process a couple of days ago. Among the players that did not make it were tackle David Foucoult, tackle and East Carolina Pirate Willie Smith, tight end and Duke Blue Devil Braxton Deaver, wide receiver Avius Capers, and project wide receiver Stephen Hill. Punter Mike Scifres was also released with an injury settlement.

The Panthers placed FB Devon Johnson, CB Leonard Johnson, WR LaRon Byrd, and DE Rakim Cox on injured reserve.

Tonight will see the starter Panthers on the bench. This game will feature all the players looking for a shot to make the 53 man roster. The Panthers are still carrying a number of players at certain positions that they will not maintain going into the regular season. Linebacker and defensive end are two places where there will be cuts before this final deadline.

Next: Panthers Acquire Lee

So get excited, because you will see a lot of Joe Webb tonight.
