The North Carolina Tar Heels will have a home in the AP Top 25 Poll for one week at least.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were already ranked in the top 25 in the first coaches poll of the season. Now they have been ranked the top twenty-five of the first Associated Press Poll as well, although this one treated them a little bit worse than the last poll did.

The Tar Heels are sitting at number twenty-two on the poll, two spots lower than their placement in the Coaches. First game opponent Georgia sits above them at number 18. Two ACC schools sit in the top 4 of the poll, and one of them is on the Heels’ schedule. That team would be number four Florida State.

The Tar Heels represent the highest ranked ACC Coastal team in the poll. That means that the Coastal Division is not gathering a ton of respect this year in strength. A loss to Georgia would likely kick the Heels out of the poll without a way to get noticed again until playing the Seminoles.

A potential good sign for the Heels is that both Pitt and Miami were able to get some votes, with Miami being just left out of this first poll.

For the East Carolina Pirates, there is the appearance of conference champ Houston at number 15. Perhaps of more importance is the appearance of Navy in the others receiving votes category. Navy is on the schedule for the Pirates this year.

No Sun Belt teams appeared in the poll, which should give Appalachian State some fuel heading into their big game with number 9 Tennessee.
