The Charlotte Hornets have added another big man to the roster in the form of Virginia’s Mike Tobey.

The Charlotte Hornets have signed another player to bring on before training camp. That would be undrafted rookie free agent center Mike Tobey according to reports from the Associated Press. Tobey is 7’0” tall and a more traditional center type.

The Hornets have been scouting Tobey for awhile. They brought him in before the draft as part of their pre-draft workouts. They also had on board for their summer league team. His contract will likely hover near the minimum and not be guaranteed.

The question to ask is, what does this say about the Hornets’ roster? It says that the Hornets are going to bring more people into camp than they can fit on the roster. This is because Tobey fits no particular need on the current Hornets roster.

More from Charlotte Hornets

The big man department is more than made up for. There are Roy Hibbert, Spencer Hawes, Cody Zeller, Frank Kaminsky, Christian Wood, and you could throw in Marvin Williams if you want.

If you want to limit the conversation to centers, then that still includes Hibbert, Hawes, and Zeller. Center is not a position of need. Minutes could open up if the team were able to trade Hawes away, but right now assume Hawes will be there.

More from Old North Banter

The position of concern is on the wing. There is still no true small forward behind Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in the lineup. One would have to assume that the plan is for Nicolas Batum to see some time at the position in order to make things work as currently constructed. Of course the Hornets also don’t have much to spend which would preclude a veteran like Caron Butler or Tayshaun Prince from serving as the fill in.

While we wait for that to be decided, we can at least get behind the idea that the Hornets have adequately scouted Tobey and there must be something there that they like.
