Charlotte Hornets: Roy Hibbert agrees to one year deal with Hornets
Roy Hibbert will sign a one-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets
Last season, Roy Hibbert played in Hollywood for the Los Angeles Lakers. This upcoming season, Hibbert will trade in the purple and gold for purple and teal. Reports have circulated that Hibbert will sign a one-year contract for five million dollars.
Signing Hibbert addresses the Hornets need to fill a void at the center position when Al Jefferson signed with the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are Hibbert’s first team. When he played there, Hibbert was an NBA all-star in 2012 and 2014. In addition, Hibbert was a member of the NBA All-Defensive Team in 2014.
Although Hibbert’s career peaked in 2014, he was instrumental in leading the Pacers to the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals. During the 2012-13 season, Hibbert recorded a triple-double (10 points, 11 rebounds, 11 blocks) against the New Orleans Hornets.

In retrospect, the Hibbert signing may seem like a sham deal to some, but it could be turn out to be a steal for the Hornets. Hibbert may arguably be the Hornets’s best shot blocker since Alonzo Mourning. In addition, it’s a one-year deal. If Hibbert does not pan out for the Hornets, then they will not re-sign him in a year.
However, if Hibbert revives his career in Charlotte, then they have a legit rebounder and shot blocker in the low post. He will not be asked to be a scorer. The Hornets are intent on centering the team around Kemba Walker and Nicolas Batum. The trade for Marco Belinelli on draft night, represents an outside threat from the perimeter.
Lets hope that Hornets assistant coach Patrick Ewing can mentor Hibbert back to the point when he was a force in the Eastern Conference. Indiana almost went to the NBA Finals in 2013 due to Hibbert’s great play. Quite possibly, the Hornets can duplicate what the Pacers had back then.
