NC State Wolfpack got two of their pack members drafted in the NFL’s 3rd Round.

In the race to see which Tobacco Road ACC program would get the first man drafted, the answer was the NC State Wolfpack. The Wolfpack were heard not once but twice in the third round as lineman Joe Thuney and quarterback Jacoby Brissett both went to the New England Patriots.

So the Patriots might convert some support of the red-blooded variety with the addition of this duo.

Thuney fits a tradition of the Patriots looking for value linemen in the draft. They will likely slot him at guard and hope that he continues a theme of blue collar blocking for the Patriots. Despite having Tom Brady, the Patriots have really been at their best when they can put a running game next to him.

Brissett is more of an insurance policy for the Patriots. They will start the season with Brady likely on suspension for 4 games. That means that Jimmy Garoppolo will be the man behind center and no one is currently behind him. Brissett moves into that spot and then will become the third string when Brady returns.

Brady has seen a number of heir apparents depart before Brady himself. If Brady wants to play three more years then Garoppolo might not be there either depending on what his market looks like. If Garoppolo leaves to start elsewhere and Brady remains then there is a possibility that it will become Brissett’s job in a few years.

Either way this was a win for Dave Doeren to have two of his guys taken in second day of the draft. He can sell prospects on a legitimate path to the pros through Raleigh. He can show them a guy who transferred to him to do it and a guy who did it entirely with State. His rivals at Duke and UNC currently have nothing to show yet this year.

Other Wolfpack players may show up in the draft’s last day, so keep your eyes peeled.
