The North Carolina Tar Heels rose to 14th in the poll leaving their future still in doubt

The North Carolina Tar Heels may have expected some love from the College Football Playoff committee this week, but they still did not get much. The Heels jumped from the 17th spot all the way to 14th in the rankings.

The fourteenth spot is still not in the suburbs of playoff consideration for the Tar Heels. One test for the committee’s thought process is how they rank Florida State relative to the Tar Heels. Florida State sits at thirteen. The Seminoles have no path to the playoff, but they have consistently been rated higher than the Tar Heels.

There is still a chance the Tar Heels could improve their positioning in the ratings. They have to beat State first and foremost. Then other teams have to drop their rivalry games in the upcoming week. As a result, Tar Heels fans will need to pull for teams like Stanford, TCU, and Florida State to knock off rivals that currently rate ahead of the Heels.

Heels fans should also pull for Oklahoma to beat Oklahoma State. A Sooners loss would drop them down, but not necessarily to the advantage of the Heels. The Cowboys at ten would seem to be a better target to climb the ladder with.

All that chaos is needed so that the Tar Heels are looking at making the final leap by beating Clemson at the ACC Championship game. It is quite a lot to ask for.

Navy continues to be the highest rated team not in the Power 5 conferences. They play Houston to decide who will represent the West in the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship game.

Among other notes, the North Carolina Tar Heels have their first thousand yard rusher since Giovani Bernard in the person of Elijah Hood.

The Tar Heels play the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday.
