Got ‘er Done! NC State Wolfpack 35 – Wake Forest Demon Deacons 17

NC State (5-2, 1-2) won a much needed game Saturday against Wake Forest (3-5, 1-4) that helped soothe the pain of consecutive conference losses against Louisville and Virginia Tech. The win ended a Winston-Salem losing streak that dates back to 2001 and kept the Pack’s Atlantic Division title and holiday bowl hopes alive. Philip Rivers was the Pack’s QB the last time NC State left Winston-Salem with a victory.

The Wolfpack helped themselves early and often as they jumped out to a 28-point first quarter lead shocking the home crowd and forcing Wake coach Dave Clawson to modify the Demon Deacon gameplan before fans were in their seats good.

The barrage began when senior quarterback Jacoby Brissett connected with receiver Maurice Trowell for a 59-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the first quarter. Matt Dayes burst an 85-yard run for the second score in what was the beginning of a magnificent 205 yard rushing performance. Brissett then hit freshman Nyheim Hines on a 58-yard deep pass for the Pack’s third touchdown.

Lightning struck quickly one last time as Dayes score again, this time from 57 yards out. NC State had amassed an amazing 322 yards in the first quarter.

NC State stymied the Demon Deacon offensive attack for much of the day, until their freshman quarterback Kendall Hinton electrified the home crowd with a dazzling display of running as he galloped 69 yards up the middle for Wake’s first score.

The Wake Forest defense would eventually settle down holding the Wolfpack to only 153 yards over the remaining game. NC State would not score again until a late 4th quarter 52-yard punt return for a touchdown by Bra’Lon Cherry effectively ended any chance for a Wake Forest comeback.

Wake Forest would score a field goal and a late touchdown with :53 seconds remaining, but never seriously threatened the Wolfpack lead.

Kudos on a much needed victory.
