Duke Blue Devils: Ranked 24th in Coaches Poll

facebooktwitterreddit

The Duke Blue Devils have broken into a poll. This week they debut at number 24 in the Amway Coaches Poll for Week 7. This is a big deal for a team that was sort of floating around the bottom of the poll looking to get in. This week it looks like USC and Georgia were nice enough to exit to give Duke the room it needed to get in.

Duke should hang around in the polls for another week as well. They are on bye and the poll voters do not usually punish teams for not playing games. It can happen, but it is rare. LSU was not punished for outright cancelling its first game of the season against McNeese State. They still hung around at 15 in the polls alongside all the teams that had actually played games.

More from Duke Blue Devils

The bad news for Duke is that their good wins that they wanted to hang their hat on have lost value tremendously. Georgia Tech was thumped by Clemson to sport four losses on the year. Northwestern, though still ranked at 21, was thumped by the Michigan Wolverines 38-0.

The good news for Duke is that they are the lone ACC Coastal Division team in the poll, and that means they are seen as the leading contender for the ACC Championship in the division. It is just hard to see any more meaning than that right now.

North Carolina collected a couple votes while on bye. Group of Five teams got a little better represented with the entry of Toledo into the poll (25) to join Memphis (22) and Boise State (20).
