Connor Barthisback and kicking again. The former North Carolina Tar Heel was brought back by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after Ryan Brindza appeared to flame out over the past few games. Barth started his career in Tampa, but spent a year in Denver with the Broncos. Barth tried to return to the Buccaneers during training camp, but was beaten out for the job by Brindza. Now Barth once more takes aim at the Pirate ship.

Most people remember Connor Barth from his four year kicking career at Chapel Hill. His most famous kick was the game winner to beat the Miami Hurricanes as a freshman. It was a capstone from a signature game that extended theJohn Buntingera another two years. Barth started his career in the pros with the Chiefs, but spent most of it in Tampa.
According to reports fromRick Stroud, Barth signed a two year deal. The Buccaneers also looked at free agent kickersKai Forbath,Randy Bullock, andBilly Cundiff. In the end they chose to go with the familiar.

Barth will face the Carolina Panthers when Tampa comes to Charlotte on the last day of the regular season. So there will be no Barth sightings for us this year.
One of things that led to Brindza’s sacking was the new extra point rule. It is having an effect by taking away some of the gimmie status that the kick had before. AlthoughJohn Carneycan tell you that the old distance was not a given either. Brindza’s trouble seems to have been technique related. He relied on hooking his kicks in and they have not been hooking lately.
It is doubtful that this development will change the NFC South in any meaningful way.
