East Carolina Pirates at SMU Mustangs Preview

The East Carolina Pirates are coming off a big win over the Virginia Tech Hokies and once again try their luck with conference play. That takes them to Dallas and the Southern Methodist University Mustangs. This is a matchup of two teams who bring a lot of offense to the table. Likely it will be the team that scores last that will win.

More from East Carolina Pirates

Do not let the 1-3 record of the Mustangs fool you, the Pirates need a conference win to keep pace in the East Division and this game may be as close to a must win as a team can get this early in conference play.

X – D on Davis
Quarterback Matt Davis is the key weapon of the Mustangs, as he leads the team in passing and rushing. It therefore follows that to stop Davis is to stop SMU. East Carolina needs some pass rush to disrupt him and linebackers ready to clean up if he runs. Would not be surprised if Zeek Bigger was used as a spy for at least part of the game.

One week of James Summers was neat. There is not likely to be an encore this week. This is because SMU’s defense gives up three hundred yards passing a game. This looks to be a return to Blake Kemp and Isaiah Jones. That is not to say that Summers may not get some snaps every now and then to mix things up.

    Z – Just Win, Baby
This is the kind of game that the Pirates should be able to win, so they need to do that. Getting surprised was something that happened last year, let’s hope that the Pirates have learned some of those lessons.
