Will Wade turns down Charlotte 49ers

The Charlotte 49ers took a blow to their coaching search when their number 1 target turned them down. That coaching candidate was Will Wade, the current head coach at Tennessee Chattanooga. Wade will remain at Chattanooga in the Southern Conference. The 49ers will continue to try and fill their coaching vacancy.

This result is unfortunate for the 49ers, but it was not unexpected. I mentioned that Conference USA’s profile had diminished over the past few years due to conference expansion by the power conferences. Here is some more proof of that.

Wade was in the Southern Conference and probably saw his road to the tournament was just as likely at Chattanooga as it would be at Charlotte. The advantages (tradition) were just not as good as the team that he currently had.

Charlotte identified Wade early as their guy, probably even earlier than Major left the program. Not getting him suggests that someone misjudged the Chattanooga coach, but it was a good effort.

Wade was the kind of coach that the 49ers need to hire. They still need to sort a list of truly lower tier schools with up and comers or assistants from bigger schools.

The 49ers still have a good basketball tradition to attract coaches with. They also have the tie to Charlotte, a big city to build a fan base in. The right guy could easily have the 49ers winning again.
