Old North State Power Rankings: Week 4 Edition

facebooktwitterreddit

Week 3 was a big week for two teams in the rankings, while two of the other teams were on byes. East Carolina knocked off Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, while Duke blew out Kansas at home. North Carolina State also had a good week, blowing out the South Florida Bulls in Tampa.

There may be a little controversy at the top this week but I have to make good on the things that I said last week, because they did come to pass. Here are the Power Rankings for Week 4.

More from North Carolina Sports

1.East Carolina Pirates (2-1)

The Pirates had a big comeback from their loss to the Gamecocks by knocking off the #18 Hokies in Lane Stadium. This big non-conference win can only make the Pirates hungry for more as North Carolina comes to town for Hall of Fame night. Shane Carden looked great in the first quarter and the end of the game, while Cam Worthy gave a worthy account of himself. North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said this was the best ECU team he had seen in eight years of playing them.

2.Duke Blue Devils (3-0)

What? Thoroughly dominate a Power conference foe, unveil a new weapon, and lose a spot in the rankings? Sorry, Devils, you simply have not played anyone yet. Don’t think that Tulane is going to change that either. Still, more Shaun Wilson please.

3.North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0)

Coming off a bye week, the Tar Heels go to Greenville to play the Pirates. A victory could put them at the top of this ranking list. A loss will mean consecutive losses to East Carolina and questions about how good this team really is. No Landon Turner for the big game either.

Okay! Three and oh. Big win against South Florida. Now you face Presbyterian. This is the problem with State advancing up these rankings. They still have not really played anybody other than a South Florida team that was not good last year. Yet every little step helps. Let’s see how far State’s new found confidence can take it.

    5.Appalachian State Mountaineers (1-1)

App was the other beneficiary of the early bye week. They will go down to Southern Miss with happy thoughts of their game against Campbell, but hopefully they did not forget the lessons from Michigan. Southern Miss is beatable, but not if taken lightly.

    6.Wake Forest Demon Deacons (1-2)

Wake almost came back against Utah State and did manage to injure Chuckie Keeton, but it was not enough to get them out of this bottom spot. The have Army this week, so if they win and App loses, then they would have a good case for going to the five spot on this list.
