The UNC Greensboro basketball schedule has been released for the upcoming season. The Spartans are scheduled for 31 games this year and a full Southern Conference slate.

Coach Wes Miller will also be bring his boys up to Indiana and inviting the North Carolina Tar Heels to come visit. This means that the Spartans will be taking on two of the cornerstone programs of college basketball this year.

The earliest part of the schedule will be dominated by games associated with the Eastern Michigan Tournament which will be held on EMU’s home court in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

  • The Schedule:

11/14 – Chowan, at Flemming Colosseum

The Chowan game is associated with the EMU tournament and likely help determine seeding.

    11/18- UNC-Wilmington

Local opponent Wilmington Seahawks come to visit. Wilmington has a new coach, former Louisville assistant Kevin Keatts. Keatts is well thought of as a recruiter, but Wilmington will still be evaluating itself when they come to Greensboro, so this could be a good game.

    11/21- EMU Round 1
    11/22- EMU Round 2
    11/23- EMU Round 3

Preseason tournaments are good practice to see how a team might handle the day-to-day play of conference tournaments later on. This is particularly true for the Spartans, because they are unlikely to get an at large bid to the NCAA. They will need to win that Southern Conference tournament when the time comes.

UNC-G is guaranteed to play Eastern Michigan, Longwood, and Youngstown State each once during the Eastern Michigan tournament.

    11/28 – AT Indiana

Tom Crean’s bunch are probably circled on the schedule. This is not quite the Super Bowl for Spartans (that game comes later), but an upset would make a big impact on the season.

    12/1- High Point

A good local rivalry game between teams that are usually about the same strength.

    12/5- AT Presbyterian

    2/10 – Greensboro College

This is the Guilford County Schools Education Day matchup. It is more of an exhibition really, but it is done to support the public schools in Guilford county.

    12/13- AT East Tennessee State

    Random early conference game.

    12/16- North Carolina

Despite the many many times that the Tar Heels have played in the Greensboro Coliseum, they have never done it as a visitor to play UNC Greensboro. That changes this year. This was done by Roy Williams to honor former player Wes Miller, similar to how North Carolina travelled to UAB last year to face Jared Haase. UNC lost that game, so I doubt they sleep walk into this one. This will be the Super Bowl on UNCG’s schedule.

    12/20- Elon

Elon left the Southern Conference for the Colonial this year. Proximity helped keep this game on the schedule, while you will notice Davidson is nowhere to be found.

    12/28- AT East Carolina

One last of conference test before the conference schedule begins. ECU will be a sturdy opponent aand hard to beat.

    12/31- Mars Hill

    1/3- Mercer

The Spartans have the pleasure of welcoming the Mercer Bears to the Southern Conference. Of course this the year after Mercer made a big splash in the NCAA Tournament by knocking out a Rodney Hood-Jabari Parker Duke team in the first round. Tough game for UNCG

    1/5- The Citadel

    2/22- Furman

    2/26- Samford

    2/28- UT-Chattanooga

3/6- Southern Conference tournament starts in Asheville, NC.

So busy year for the Southern Conference and for UNCG. Opportunities abound on the schedule. Sorry to see Davidson gone, but glad to see the addition of Mercer. Good luck to the Spartans this year in basketball, but don’t let November come too quickly.
