East Carolina athletic director Terry Holland is stepping down to take a less involved role of athletic director emeritus. Holland has been at the helm of the Pirate athletic programs since 2004. He will move to his new position once the university names a successor.

University Chancellor Steve Ballard has this to say about Holland, “Terry Holland has served ECU with distinction since 2004 and has been a close colleague and valued leader as we pursued bold goals and strong aspirations for the future, the success of our teams, the growth of our finances, the evolution of world class facilities, and our acceptance into the Big East — all of these goals have greatly benefited from Terry’s energy and vision.”

The school has decided to name its Olympic Sports Complex in honor of Terry Holland. The complex, a 4 sport facility, will be named the Terry Holland Olympic Sports Complex.

Terry Holland has had a tremendous impact on Pirate athletics since coming on as athletic director in 2004. While holding the position the Pirates have seen significant growth in on campus facilities, academic success, and he has helped to increase the exposure ECU received by aggressively strengthening the schedule of opponents the Pirates faced in all sports.

Holland can be credited with many important developments on and off campus for the Pirates. The biggest development no doubt is the anticipated move of the football program from Conference USA to the BCS eligible Big East conference. Other university athletic program growth under Holland includes a 7,000 seat expansion for the football stadium, stadium attendance records being broken for 5 straight seasons, improvements to the football teams practice facility, the ongoing construction of a basketball practice facility, and of course the Terry Holland Olympic Sports Complex mentioned earlier. All of this development  would not have been possible without the leadership of Holland. He has brought membership of the schools booster club, the Pirate club, to over 16,000 and scholarship fundraising has gone above $6 million dollars.

Terry Holland has been involved in collegiate sports for 48 years. He has served as AD at schools such as Davidson, Virginia, and finally at ECU. Terry Holland has left behind a legacy of growth and success wherever he has been. East Carolina has been extremely fortunate to have had Terry Holland as their AD for the past 8 years. His impact on the university’s sports programs and the university itself will continue to be felt for decades to come.
